7:57PM - from a fire sign -- journal friending info

Hola. This journal is not exactly "friends-only," but sorta kinda "friends-mostly." I post most entries publicly, but then go back and f-lock them after a week or so.

11:53PM - "I was blind but now I see." Jeebus, and they make it sound like a GOOD thing.

Just got glasses, which apparently I've needed for something like eight years, though I thought I was getting by just fine (except for the squinting at road signs, notes on boards at school, small-print icons, etc.). The first thing I see clearly in nearly a decade? My face in a mirror, which the oh-so-helpful LensCrafters guy seemed to think I'd like.

Conclusion? I hate the sighted world. Why did no one tell me I look my age?!? Bugger. I'm so learning about this "exfoliating" and "toner" nonsense.

In honor of the (dubious) glory of Sight, I post icons. Some were made pre-sight, some post-sight. Can't bother identifying which is which. When I take my glasses off, I can't even tell.

1:42AM - alskdjfadslkfjdk;lasdf,

Okay, sorry, f'list. Skip=flagillion (yes, that is a play on "flagitious"!) is too much for me right now. Me read slow.

Am currently doing three things in life: working on that aforementioned writing project (in revisions now, with a new deadline, which has already slightly passed, but I'm on it!), fantasizing about pirate porn (gooooooooooood), and coordinating a massive collaborative b'day prezzie for my Cancer buddy (yes! I have a local Cancer friend, even though I'm an Aries! And I love him!) which seems to involve my whoring myself out to strangers in order to solicit their money for said (highly expensive drum set) prezzie. Also, Merc Retrograde is my busiest time for people showing up on my doorstep or finding me in the grocery line or whatever and talking about their issues, so there's that. (I'm irrelevant most times of the year. Annoying as it can be, I do value these "I have a purpose!" periods.)

So...back in a while, is what I mean to say. Possibly after the 15th, when Merc's gone direct again. Best to all!

11:43PM - ficcus interruptus

Sorry, folks, really not trying to ignore anyone. I'm working on a writing project on a deadline (no, nothing that pays, drat it all), and it's all I can do to keep myself away from any and every distraction possible. (Staying away from the computer and working longhand doesn't even do the trick, as I managed to spend six hours yesterday on a crack!tastic Jjail sequel instead of the project. I'll reread that one later and see if it's worth cleaning up.) Project's finally going well, and the bulk oughtta be done tomorrow or the next day, so I'll be looking at flist/comments/mail again after that...

11:57AM - why, when you're being a bully, you should be sure your victim doesn't have AN ARMY OF BUFFALO OMG

Surely this has made the rounds of LJ before, but on the chance it didn't... Battle at Kruger. A baby water buffalo gets taken down by lions at the edge of a water hole. Then crocs come up for a bite o' baby, and the lions deal with that. Then the few grownup buffalo the pride scared away at the beginning return -- with absolutely everyone -- and kick the lions' asses. And baby jumps up to rejoin the herd.

I can't help getting kinda smug when vegetarians win. *smugs*

ETA: Quick Sparrington ficlet rec: Unfair Tactical Advantage by [info]kayliemalinza. The summary didn't make me read it, but the rating comment did: "PG-13 for Jack's helpless lecherous observations." Chee!

11:36AM - astrology babble

Merc retrograde approaches, mis amigos y amigas. Ten days from now, though those of y'all more sensitive to Mercury -- or those who have Mercury already making a significant aspect to your natal chart that will continue through most of the retrograde period -- might be feeling early effects already. Prepare for communication difficulties (beware the kerfuffles), ghosts from the past, reflection and rethinking and revisiting choices made. Remember that it's a valuable time, one for consideration rather than action, so think thoroughly and don't go moving on any world-changing decisions 'til after July 9, if that can be avoided. And it's generally considered not the best time to sign any meaningful contracts, what with communication being more difficult and thinking less clear for most folks than is normally the case.

Unless astrology's bupkiss.*

11:56PM - GIP

Edit: Link no workie. Google "Pepe le Pew quotes" and follow the first result.

Favorite so far: (While on a yacht) "I am ze captain, and you are ze first mate. Promotions will follow quickly!"

More in a nautical, Norrington, or just naughty vein: 'A colleague of mine once noted, there is very little difference between men and women. But, VIVE LE DIFFERENCE!!' )

2:19AM - icons

A few AWE icons, all a mite spoilery: Barbossa, Tia Dalma, hot twin chicks, Moog, Norrington, one I keep calling "we poosh ze leetle sheeps around" in my head, though I don't know why... I forgot how hard it is to bend a little 100 X 100 pixel box to one's will.

Adding more sporadically without making a new update. When I get a great fat lot of 'em, I'll post a fresh link.

12:39PM - GeeJay's cuter to say than ElJay.

I've already lost track of who I gacked the link from, but this is a great report on the Six Apart/WfI event: Six Apart casts “evanesco”. Fanfic authors cast “expelliarmus”.

An excerpt. )

While I don't feel particularly worried about the future of LJ, I did think it'd be prudent (and fun and different -- 2000 icons!) to get my greatestjournal set up. (I also reserved "firesignwriter" at insanejournal, though I haven't done anything with that one yet.) Diversity and experimentation are the keys to evolutionary success. No need to keep all the eggs in the LJ basket, eh?

I'm answering comments/mail in fits and starts...

1:04PM - important clarification re: sucrose swiping simians

I would just like to clarify in response to the explanation of LJ Interests found here:

Although they are listed among my interests, I do not like, stand in favor of, or support the perfidious acts of sugar stealing monkey people. I'm sorry if I inadvertently offended anyone who's been victimized by these rogues by including them in my list of interests Things I Stand Heretofore In Favor Of (aka "my TISHIFOs").

I am frankly alarmed to discover that [info]monkeypuzzle and [info]twistingflame do support sugar theft by monkey people. Don't worry: I'm looking into the proper avenues for reporting them right this moment. Watch here for critical updates regarding this situation.

12:24PM - divisions in the ranks?

In doing a little skimming to see what I've missed in fandom and particularly about Norrington over the past - verylongtime - I find myself having to furrow my brow and scratch my head and go, "Was ist diese...'anti-squee'...?"

I don't actually want to know any more about it, 'cause I'm sure it's something I would have gotten passionately concerned with had I been here, but now I'm enjoying this safely removed perspective. But it's wonderful, at the least, that a character dismissed and demonized at the beginning of the fandom eventually inspired acrimonious(?) battles between competing loyalists. He's come so far!

Any majorly awesome recs from the past year-ish I should not miss? I'm drowning in options.

Rating/Warning: Tame. Very. Includes spoilers for AWE.

1:13PM - a comment on AWE

I'm kinda hesitant to say this for fear of jinxing myself, but I do think I'm gonna be around a bit more now. Just give me a little time to ease back in, m'dears.

11:28AM - more playing with Lizzie

Had time to write more of the Elizabeth thing while doing laundry. Hee. Fun now. Haven't had time to give it a thorough edit; please forgive any typos.

First part.

11:08PM - um...potc...thing...

I know where it's going and where it's been, and expect it'll be keeping my mind occupied this week, which suggests I might actually get this one finished -- but if you're especially leery of WsIP, you should probably skip this for now.

Playing with Lizzie. Not worth a rating/warning yet. Might not make any sense at all so far, but hey, I'm just happy I wrote something fictional again. )

1:43PM - fly-by post

In a rush, can't answer anyone 'til later, but I just had the coolest encounter when I took Bruce to the park for a quick run. There was this sturdy, young-grandmotherly-type Hispanic woman, maybe 50 or so, who wouldn't have stood out in any normal setting, anywhere. What made me notice her? She was training for javelin, shot put and discus competitions.

We chatted a while. She's medaled a lot, and she travels all over the world to compete. She's awesome.

10:20AM - what my grandma did to Jack

You know how I hate those "omg I haaate seeing Thing X and Thing Y in fic, you writers who write Thing X and Thing Y piss me right off - die, Thing Y! I'd kill you myself if I could" posts? Well, if you don't know, I haaate seeing those posts, and writers of those posts piss me right off, and I'd murderify those posts myself if I could. What the hell do I care if you're annoyed because five writers whose stories I've never read have used the same descriptive phrase I came to with my own wee brain? And how much do I really not give a frig if you have an inordinate distaste for the actual common name of the bump on the boobie that gets pokey when its owner is happy (or cold)? I know, I know - you're just trying to "shape your fannish experience to better please you." Well, bugger off. Your fanshape only looks shiny because it's fresh poo.

That said, here's my "omg I haaate seeing this in fic, and here's why" post. There is exactly one thing listed behind the cut. It's a completely irrational hatred to have, but I share it because, last night, I dreamed a dream that made me realize why I hate it, and now it won't get out of my head until I inflict it on whoever braves the cut. (And I'm cutting it because, if you haaate these posts like I do, you shouldn't have to see my utterly senseless pet peeve. Why trouble yourself?)

Bah. This is one of those stupid things that won't get out of your head and let you sleep until you get out of bed and type it up. I think it's fanfic's way of threatening me with insomnia if I dare forget it.
